COACHING FAQS | For Parents of Kids Ages 2-10 | For Parents of Preteens and Teens

What is coaching?

Coaching is a personal service for busy people who need to enhance relationships, achieve specific goals and acquire new skills.

Life Skills for American Families BrochureDoes coaching work?

Coaching is effective because of four unique aspects:

  • synergy (the coach and client partner as a team, focusing on the client's needs and goals);
  • skills (for life, at work, and at home);
  • structure (guidelines, encouragement and feedback are offered), and
  • expertise (proven, timeless, principles and knowledge are shared).

The Top Ten Ways to Frustrate Your Kids
by Timothy Smith from Connecting With Your Kids:
How Fast Families Can Move From Chaos to Closeness

(Bethany House 2005)

  1. Don’t bond with your young child by giving him physical affection, time and attention.
  2. Believe that professional child-care providers are an adequate substitute for your relationship with your child.
  3. Don’t cuddle, read, talk with or play with young children.
  4. Ignore all the fuss and hassle about rules, routines and discipline.
  5. Don’t bring your moral and spiritual values to your child. Let her discover them on her own.
  6. Give your child plenty of freedom and control over his own life.
  7. Live your life through your child. His success is yours; his failure is yours. His performance should help you feel secure.
  8. Never allow your child to be held accountable by having to experience consequences for her behavior.
  9. Expect the best even in areas where she isn’t particularly gifted.
  10. Don’t waste your time talking about issues of importance.

Tim Smith's Family Coaching Practice (download brochure - large file) focuses on these skills. Appointments are in person or on the phone.
